Preferred Speakers makes it easy to find the right speaker

A True Shoe Saga – And the Angst of the Online Searches

While shopping online can create a dopamine rush, it’s not always the most efficient way to search for something important, like:

  • A pair of shoes comfortable (and fashionable) enough to get you from AM to PM at your event.
  • A keynote speaker who will take your audience from meh to heck yeah!

I went online recently to buy a new pair of shoes. I added the right filters:

  • Comfort was more important than price.
  • No stilettos. (Haven’t worn those since I was in my 20s!)
  • Black.
  • Good support.
  • I didn’t want tennis shoes. (But I did want their comfort!)
  • I have certain brands I prefer. (But comfort, comfort, comfort.)

I hit search. There were so many choices! I could have scrolled forever with the number of options I got.

After what seemed like days, I bought a pair of low heels from a brand that rhymes with Tan Sailor. They arrived, looked good, and I put them on with the excitement of a five-year-old who just got a pair of Squishmallow slippers for Christmas! I walked around a bit and thought “I’m not sure these will work.” I drove barefoot to my function a few days later, put on the beautiful black short heels as I exited my car, hobbled around that evening, and kicked them off as soon as my tush hit the car seat.

My next online search produced a cute pair of clunky penny loafers. They felt better, but I needed a pair of insoles from the drug store. I wore them to my next function. They were just okay.

Back to the online search. My next pair was a moccasin with no heel; slipper-like with a slip-resistant bottom. Boring and no support.

I tried flats. I tried square heel. I got blisters. This has been going on for six months. Buy. Return. Buy. Return. Buy. Return. It’s been a huge pain in the neck. I’ve returned 10 pairs and I’m still wearing my tennis shoes.

The moral of my shoe saga: I guess I’ll have to hoof it over to the mall, get someone who can help, try them on, walk around a bit, and narrow my search.

I mean, I’m not looking for a Carrie-Bradshaw-Sex-and-the-City relationship with my shoes. (Although I do admire her unwavering sense of style.)

I certainly don’t need my shoes to take me somewhere if I click them three times like in The Wizard of Oz. (But how cool would that be?)

And I don’t believe that my shoe will bring me a prince like Cinderella. (I have one of my own already, thank you.)

But we do have a speaker with a Cinderella story. Jim Morris went from a 35-year-old high school teacher to a flame-throwing major league pitcher in just three months, and his life story made the big screen in The Rookie.

Goodness knows, I don’t foresee any shoe affording me the ability to complete 50 Ironmans in 50 states in 50 consecutive days.

But we do have a speaker James Lawrence, also known as The Iron Cowboy, who did just that and even more. James is the author of REDEFINE IMPOSSIBLE and subject of 2 documentaries: Iron Cowboy | The Story of the 50.50.50 and Conquer 100.

We put our heart and “sole” into every client interaction.
Our stability and support take finding your perfect fit from meh to heck yeah!
