I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing
In the early ‘70s, Coca Cola gathered a group of young people from all over the world on a hilltop in Italy for an ad campaign that offered a message of hope, optimism, harmony, and unity during a time of extreme division in the world.
The song they sang constituted more than just a catchy tune. It became a worldwide phenomenon that celebrated humanity in all its forms including race, religion, and cultural differences.
Here is an excerpt from the lyrics:
I’d like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves
I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company
I’d like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land
Some consider the campaign/song an effort toward diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which actually date back to the 1960s and the Equal Pay Act (1963), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (1964), and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (1967).
And many consider music – even commercial jingles – a connector among people.
